Tutwiler, MS - The Untold Story

On 3/23/11 NBC Nightly News in their Making A Difference Segment, profiled Dr. Ann Brooks, a physician / nun serving the people of Tutwiler, MS with free or low cost medical care. They reported on the high poverty rates

of the town, but what they fail to report was that the Town of Tutwiler, MS generates over $1,000,000 Million Dollars Annually from a Private Prison.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallahatchie_County_Correctional_Facility I, along with many others have been engaged in an ongoing effort to get an accounting of all that money.

The past and current Mayors of Tutwiler and three (a majority) of the board members have refused to provide an accounting of the funds received from the sale of water and property taxes from Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility. Letters requesting Governor Haley Barbour, Att. General Jim Hood, State Auditor, Stacey Pickering, US Att. General Eric Holder and Mississippi Newspapers investigate this matter were sent several months ago by me. To date, no one from any newspaper, state or federal office, that I contacted has responded to my letter. Why? Something rotten and unethical could be occurring. Could it be that too many well connected people have their hand in the preverbal “Cookie Jar”?

I requested that NBC Nightly News do a follow-up story, if they have the courage to ask the right questions. I also encourage bloggers, independent journalist, newspapers, cable news and film producer to investigate this and expose the truth of Tutwiler. Tutwiler has a majority Black African American population and and Black Elected Officials, who depend on the legal advice and representation of Attorney Whitney, who is White.
He is suspected by many residents to be the real power in charge of the town’s money. I suspect race might have something to do with the silence on the part of Black and White Newspapers, Politicians and people who don't have the courage to stand up for what is legal, just and fair. http://www2.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=105&STORY=/www/story/03-17-1999/0000890739
