Jabbo Smith:
Cladys Jabbo Smith Was Born On December 24, 1908, In Pembroke, Georgia.
He Began Playing Trumpet At Age 10 And After Running Away From An Orphanage At Age 17, He Went To Philadelphia To Play Professionally.
One Of America's Pioneer Jazz Music Innovators, Smith Was Billed As A Rival To The Great Louis Armstrong During The 1920's And 1930's.
He Played With Several Bands During His Career, Including The Eagle Eye Shields Band, Charlie Elgar, Tiny Parham, Carl Dickerson, Charlie Johnson's Paradise Ten And The James P. Johnson Orchestra.
In 1927 Smith Recorded With Duke Ellington On A Song Called "Black And Tan Fantasy." His Debut Recording With His Own Band, The Rhythm Aces, Happened In 1929.
Along With Legends, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespe, Miles Davis And Clifford Brown, Jabbo Smith Is Considered A Key Link In The Modernization Of The Jazz Trumpet Style.
Smith Died January 16, 1991.
