As The Star Spangled Banner Played At The 1968 Olympic Games In Mexico, Tommie Smith And John Carlos Bowed Their Heads And Raised Clinched Fists, Which Was At The Time, A Symbol Of Black Power And Racial Unity.
Smith Wore A Black Glove On His Right Hand And Carlos Wore One On His Left Hand. The Athletes Gave The Black Powet Salute To Protest Racial Discrimination In The United States.
Smith And Carlos Had Won Gold Medals, Respectively, In The 200-Meter Dash. The Two Men Were Allowed To Keep Their Medals, But Were Suspended From The U.S. Team And Prohibited From Further Competition.
