  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

Emergency Room can be a Deadly Place

We will all be or are statistics as we travel through life at one point or the other.  One statistic you may want to avoid is death by Emergency Room (ER), a study has discovered over 200,000 deaths attributed to faulty treatments at U.S. ER departments.  Many different reasons contribute to these tragedies; overcrowded and overworked staffers at ER's, lengthy waiting periods at time, faulty and misdiagnosis, mistreatment errors, mistakes involving medications,i.e. overdose, deadly reaction to incorrect dosage or deadly reaction to mixing medications that should not be taken together.  Sad to think that many people in need of help go to a hospital and due to problems beyond their control can have their problem accentuated and in some cases can even end up dead.  Some of these problems can even be found in a quote "Good Hospital".  If you suffer trauma you may want to go to a "Trauma Hospital" but depending on the severity of your trauma, you may have to wait in line as the ER determines which "Trauma" patient has priority.  If the hospital adminstrator's wife stubs her toe, or another doctor's son has a headache, not surprisingly you might have to wait a little longer.

No easy fix or remedy to this problem, stay healthy and if you must go to an ER for treatment, try to have someone who has some medical knowledge accompany you.  When you are sick or traumatized you are not likely to be rational.  If you have an advocate looking out for you they can at least try to keep an eye on things, see who is involved in the treatment process, get names, note medications and see what is actually being done.  Remember there are charges for everything, if you need to dispute a bill later.  Finally if you are discharged or admitted and not clear or satisfied with your treatment or care, contact a physician or advisor you trust and relay your concerns to them.
